Top 5 Reasons You Should Join A Mother's Group
Becoming a new parent can be an overwhelming and isolating experience. With all the challenges of caring for a new baby, it can be a struggle to get out of your pyjamas, let alone out of the house. The first few weeks of life with a newborn can be crazy, and usually involves very little sleep which is physically and mentally exhausting.
One of the ways to navigate this new challenge is to join a mother’s group. Meeting up with other Mums who are experiencing the same challenges as you are, helps to create a friendly, supportive and encouraging network.
A Mum who knows this only too well is Carene Carroll, the founder of the hugely popular Modern Mamas Group. Launched in February 2017, Carene created a new concept of a 10-Week Mother’s Group that gives Mums a cool, relaxed space to share experiences, triumphs and even disasters (yes, we’ve all been there). Throw in fun activities for Bub, a yummy brunch and a coffee – what more do you need!
At Modern Mamas, you catch up with the same mums every week and often make lifelong friends. All babies are the same age, and it is a great opportunity to chat and share knowledge and questions with other mums. There’s nothing quite like discussing your parenting concerns with mums who are going through the same issues at the same time, especially those who are first time mums too. The instant support and opportunity to have a good laugh is fantastic.
1. Create a Support Network
Connecting with other Mums is especially beneficial if you don’t have a family support network or friends with babies at the same age. The feelings of isolation and loneliness, compounded by sleep deprivation with all of those night feeds, can leave anyone feeling stressed and tearful.
2. Helps You to Adjust to Parenthood
For new Mums who previously worked full-time, it can be a big adjustment getting used to being at home constantly. Having a weekly catch-up with other Mums gives you the motivation to get out of the house and do something to fill your cup.
3. Find Your Tribe
Finding your tribe is important as it provides the benefits of social interaction with other Mums and creates feelings of connectedness which is something we all need. Not all Mums will find their tribe straight away, but we encourage you to go along and give it a try. You might just meet some new friends.
4. Gets You Out of the House
Having a weekly meet up is brilliant and is something to look forward to. It’s a good excuse to get dressed, get out of the house and into the fresh air.
5. Beneficial for Baby
It is beneficial for your baby in developing their social skills when they mix with other children in a group environment. Babies learn best through imitation and as your baby grows, interacting in a safe space allows them to observe, learn and experience social interactions.
Where to Find a Mother’s Group
If you live in Brisbane, take a look at Modern Mamas and sign up for a 10 Week Program. For those outside of Brisbane, check with your local council, community centre and library for weekly groups that you can join. Or you can also search parenting websites and social media for local meet-ups.
