How Do I Soothe My Baby's Dry Skin?

When the seasons change and winter approaches, the drop in temperature combined with dry air, depletes the skin of its natural moisture. But knowing the right products to use for your baby's skin can help to keep their skin soft and hydrated, rather than dry and chapped.
1. Use a Soap Free Wash
To make your baby's bath time more moisturizing, swap soap for a body cleansing oil or bath milk with pure calming oils or other plant oils to fortify and protect the skin's moisture barrier. An Ecostork favourite: Gilly Goat Calm Baby Oil Bath Milk, which is rich in vitamin A, vitamin E, Chamomile and Lavender to deeply moisturise and calm your baby's skin.
2. Pat the Skin Dry
When drying baby's skin after bath time, try not to rub the skin. Instead, gently pat the skin dry with a soft towel. Rubbing can irritate the skin, especially if is dry or sensitive, and remove moisture from the skin.
3. Use a Hydrating Moisturiser
Once you have finished patting dry your baby's skin, massage a moisturiser into the skin to lock in moisture. Try a natural, chemical-free moisturiser such as Wotnot 100% Natural & Organic Body Lotion, which is enriched with vitamin E and certified organic oils. This velvety lotion with gently nourish and soothe the skin from the outside in.
4. Choose Natural Fibres
Another tip to help prevent irritation to the skin, is to ensure you are dressing your baby in natural fibres such as cotton. Look for bodysuits and sleeping bags made of GOTS certified organic cotton. Cotton is ideal for summer or winter months, as natural fibres allow the skin to breathe.
5. Use a Fragrance-Free Laundry Detergent
When washing baby's clothes, opt for a fragrance-free laundry detergent. Try Ecostore Laundry Powder Ultra Sensitive which is a plant and mineral based laundry powder. This fragrance free formula is suitable for sensitive skin. It is sustainably manufactured in New Zealand to the strictest environmental standards.
Dry skin is a common condition in winter when the air is cooler and drier, but simple changes to your routine can help to reduce the effects. If your baby's skin doesn't improve, or the symptoms get worse, be sure to consult your healthcare professional.
